Criminal Defence

Instructed when it matters most

Most criminal cases are shaped long before the first court date. What you say in your first statement, and whether anyone checks the evidence early, often decides how the case ends.

Why you need it

An investigation usually starts with a phone call or a knock on the door. You are asked to attend an interview, sometimes the same day. Under section 22 of the Criminal Procedure Code 2010 you must state what you know of the facts, and the statement can be used at trial. People who go in unprepared often say more than they need to, guess at details they are unsure of, or sign a statement that does not quite say what they meant.

After a charge, the decisions keep coming: bail, whether to ask the prosecution to reduce or withdraw a charge, whether to plead guilty or claim trial, what the sentencing range looks like. A conviction can cost you your job, your professional licence or your right to stay in Singapore. Decisions taken in the first weeks are hard to undo later.

How we help

We advise before you give a statement where we can, and afterwards on what the statement means for your case. We read the charge against the evidence and the statutory elements, and we write to the Attorney-General’s Chambers where there are grounds to reduce or withdraw it.

If the case goes to trial, we prepare it fully: witness evidence, documents, expert evidence and legal submissions. If you plead guilty, we prepare a mitigation plea grounded in the sentencing precedents. We also handle appeals against conviction and sentence.
